How Do You Teach Place Value in a Fun Way?
Teaching the concepts of Place Value and Learning Curve are not easy. This is a subject that requires a lot of practice and patience. However, as a former special education teacher, I developed a game that helped my students learn very quickly how to place values in the classroom. The game was called “Place-value”; in this game students were asked to first identify the object on the board that had a certain monetary value. Once they were able to correctly identify the object, they were then asked to find out how much that object could be used for with their money.
With that success, my teaching methods became very valuable to me as a parent and teacher. I began to think about how to use math manipulatives in a way that would add interest and excitement to the curriculum. After all, what better way to teach valuable concepts to young children in an exciting and entertaining way than by using fun concept ideas.

One idea was to design a place value game that was based on both thedigitization and placement of digits on the board. The game would start with a child being on the board and asking, “How many cents do you want to spend on this item?” Then, they would place their hands on the flat surface on which the digitized image would be printed. As they reached for their money, they would be asked if they could repeat the digit that they just placed on the flat surface. In doing so, they would be asking themselves, “Does this dollar bill really have any place value?” If the child answered yes, they would receive a point.
Another great way to teach place value to children is through the use of manipulatives. Many of these manipulatives are excellent at teaching concepts to young children. For example, the sticker “Sticker Cash” is a very easy concept to grasp. In using manipulatives, a child is made to manipulate either the amount of money that they are earning or the amount of money that they are spending, by manipulating the amount of stickers that they are using. These manipulatives can get kids thinking about their budgets as well as how to save money for the future. Because a child is using a basic concept, such as dollars and cents, these games are great for teaching basic economics and money management skills.

All of these concepts, especially add, multiply, and division, need to be taught carefully, so that students don’t accidentally find themselves performing an operation that they have already learned.
The key to teaching students about add, multiply, and division is making sure that they are actually learning the operations while being entertained at the same time. In many math classrooms, teachers tend to spend most of their teaching time performing line activities, such as addition, subtraction, and division. Although this can be effective, by spending most of your teaching time performing these boring line activities, you are really not getting your students to think, and you are not really providing any fun ways for students to visualize the answers that they are finding when doing these operations. As long as you stay true to the basics of learning math, through simple games, and add in some fun, you can make teaching place value activities fun.
